In high school, Tapaya won art contests for his Alma Mater. Later on, he pursued a degree in fine arts at the University of the Philippines. After bagging the grand prize for the Nokia Art Awards in 2001, he was sent to the Parsons School of Design in New York, and the University of Art and Design in Helsinki to further his studies.
